For non-standard requirements, production can be based on customer drawings or samples. Spring dimensions and material should be confirmed before quotation because changing the section thickness or cone height changes the load-deflection behaviour.

Product Overview

DIN 6796 conical spring washers use a tapered disc profile that compresses under load to generate continuous axial spring force, compensating thermal expansion, material creep and relaxation to maintain bolt preload and resist vibration-induced loosening without extra lock components.

How the DIN 6796 Washer Maintains Preload

A DIN 6796 washer is not simply a curved flat washer. Its conical geometry gives it a defined load-deflection characteristic.

When the bolt is tightened, the cone is progressively flattened. This deformation stores elastic energy in the washer. If the joint later experiences thermal expansion, embedment, material creep or minor dimensional relaxation, the washer can release part of its stored elastic deformation and continue applying axial force to the joint.

This is the main reason to select a conical spring washer when maintaining clamp load is more important than simply increasing friction at the thread.

The available spring travel is particularly important. A washer with insufficient working deflection may become nearly flat early in the tightening process and provide little additional compensation afterwards. Conversely, excessive deflection can move the joint away from the intended operating range.

For engineering applications, the washer should therefore be selected according to required spring load, available deflection, joint stiffness and operating temperature, rather than bolt diameter alone.

Where a Conical Spring Washer Makes More Sense

DIN 6796 is particularly useful where the joint is exposed to changes after assembly.

Typical examples include

  • joints with significant temperature changes;
  • assemblies containing materials with different thermal expansion rates;
  • bolted joints where gasket or substrate compression can settle over time;
  • machinery subject to repeated vibration or cyclic loading;
  • electrical and industrial equipment where maintaining clamp force is important;
  • assemblies where a compact axial spring element is preferred.

It should not automatically be treated as a replacement for every locking washer. A serrated washer primarily creates mechanical tooth engagement, while a conical spring washer works by maintaining axial force as the joint moves within the spring's working range.

For severe vibration applications, the complete joint design—including bolt grade, tightening torque, joint stiffness and washer working point—should be evaluated rather than relying on the washer alone.

Key Features

  • Tapered spring preload (essential): the conical disc stores elastic energy under compression and continuously applies axial force to the bolt head/nut, compensating creep, thermal expansion and relaxation.
  • Vibration-resistant locking: the spring action absorbs shock and vibration, reducing self-loosening risk without extra lock components.
  • Compact one-piece design: a single conical part saves space and suits limited mounting areas and higher loads.
  • Stamped precision and consistency: high-speed progressive die stamping keeps cone angle and thickness consistent for stable spring output.
  • Clear series differences: conical spring washers (spring compensation), split spring washers (friction/spring force) and serrated lock washers (mechanical bite) are selected by application (see table below).
  • Sizes per company chart: standard sizes are supplied per the company size chart; non-standard sizes can be made from drawings or samples.

Spring/lock washer selection comparison

Type Structure Key characteristics Typical applications
DIN 6796 conical spring washer (this page) Smooth tapered disc High and stable spring force; compensates creep/thermal expansion; retains preload Automotive chassis, general machinery, electrical, rail heavy-load vibration joints
Split spring washer (DIN 127) Split elastic ring Friction/spring-force locking with limited compensation General fastening joints
Serrated lock washer (DIN 6797/6798) Internal/external teeth Mechanical bite locking; no spring preload compensation Vibration-resistant joints (no preload compensation needed)

Material Selection for Different Service Conditions

The material should be selected according to both spring behaviour and environmental exposure.

  • 65Mn spring steel is suitable when elastic performance and spring response are the primary considerations. It is commonly considered for mechanically demanding applications where the washer needs sufficient hardness and repeated elastic loading capability. A protective surface treatment is normally required where corrosion exposure is significant.
  • AISI 304 (A2) provides a practical balance between corrosion resistance and mechanical performance for general industrial equipment, machinery and outdoor assemblies. It is a common choice when stainless construction is required without the higher corrosion resistance level of 316.
  • AISI 316 (A4) is preferable where chloride exposure, salt spray, marine atmosphere or aggressive cleaning conditions make corrosion resistance a major concern. It is particularly relevant to outdoor equipment and installations in coastal environments.

For spring applications, material selection should not be based on corrosion resistance alone. Yield strength, hardness, elastic range and fatigue behaviour at the operating temperature should also be considered.

Manufacturing Control for Spring-Type Washers

The critical manufacturing issue for DIN 6796 is not simply whether the washer is stamped into a conical shape. The finished parts need consistent geometry so that washers from the same batch behave similarly under load.

Ningbo Yinzhou Zhenhua uses stamping and forming processes with dedicated tooling, followed by dimensional and process inspection. For OEM production, the tooling and forming parameters can be developed around the approved drawing or sample.

Particular attention can be given to

  • cone height, material thickness, inner and outer diameter, forming consistency, surface condition and batch-to-batch dimensional stability.
  • Where required, the customer can also define the intended installation condition or spring-load requirement so that production is not based solely on nominal dimensions.
  • The company operates under an IATF 16949 quality management system, with production traceability supporting repeat orders and batch consistency.
  • Custom development is available for applications requiring a specific cone height, thickness, material or working characteristic.

Surface Treatment and Its Effect on the Spring Part

  • The surface finish should be matched to the washer material and service environment rather than selected as a standard catalogue option.
  • For stainless-steel DIN 6796 Conical Spring Washers, passivation can be used to improve the condition of the natural passive surface after forming. Plain or polished finishes may be selected where appearance, cleanliness or downstream assembly requirements matter.
  • For carbon-steel versions such as 65Mn, corrosion-protection options can include zinc plating, black oxide, phosphating or zinc-flake coatings such as Dacromet. The selected coating must be compatible with the washer's deformation during installation and with the required corrosion protection.
  • This is particularly important for conical spring washers because the part changes shape during loading. A coating that performs well on a rigid flat washer may not necessarily be the best choice for a component undergoing repeated elastic deflection.
  • For demanding projects, the material, hardness, coating thickness and expected operating environment should therefore be confirmed together.

FAQ

Q1. How do I choose a DIN 6796 washer for a specific bolt size?

Bolt diameter is only the starting point. Check the washer's inside and outside diameter, free height, thickness and required spring load at the installed height. For joints where preload retention is critical, the required working deflection should be defined before selecting the washer.

Q2. What happens if the washer is completely flattened during tightening?

Once the cone approaches its flat condition, most of the available spring travel has been consumed. Further tightening does not provide unlimited additional compensation. If the washer is consistently flattened during installation, the selected size or working condition should be reviewed.

Q3. Is a DIN 6796 washer suitable for repeated vibration?

It can help maintain clamp load when the joint experiences small movements, thermal changes or settling within the washer's elastic range. For severe transverse vibration, however, the entire fastening system should be evaluated because spring action and anti-rotation are different functions.

Q4. Can DIN 6796 replace a wedge-locking washer?

Not as a direct one-to-one replacement. DIN 6796 maintains preload through elastic deflection, whereas a wedge-locking washer pair uses cam geometry to resist loosening rotation. The correct choice depends on whether the primary problem is joint relaxation, thermal movement, vibration or rotational loosening.

Q5. Which material is better for high-temperature applications?

There is no universal answer based only on 304, 316 or 65Mn. Spring performance changes with temperature, and the allowable working range depends on material condition and actual load. For elevated-temperature applications, provide the operating temperature and required spring load when requesting a quotation.

Q6. Can you manufacture DIN 6796 washers according to a spring-load requirement rather than a standard size?

For OEM projects, the washer can be developed from a drawing or sample, and the required working condition can be discussed with the production team. Provide the bolt size, available installation space, target load, expected deflection, material preference and operating environment.
