Product Overview

A Z Ribbon Washer is a flat stamped washer with a continuous Z-shaped raised pattern formed on its contact face. Unlike a conventional toothed washer, it does not depend on sharp teeth cutting deeply into the mating material. The embossed ribs create repeated contact lines that increase resistance to relative movement between the washer and the adjoining surface.

This makes the washer useful when a joint needs anti-rotation performance without the aggressive surface penetration associated with serrated teeth.

The actual locking effect depends on the applied clamp load, mating-material condition, surface finish, rib geometry and tightening process. For this reason, the Z-rib profile should be selected as part of the joint rather than treated as a universal replacement for a conventional lock washer.

Ningbo Yinzhou Zhenhua manufactures Z-pattern stamped washers from AISI 304, AISI 316 and 65Mn, with the rib geometry, washer dimensions and material selected according to the customer's application or drawing.

How the Z-Rib Works Under Clamp Load

The important feature is not simply the letter-shaped pattern. It is the way the embossed profile interacts with the joint after tightening.

  • Before tightening

The raised Z ribs provide localized contact rather than a completely flat interface.

  • During tightening

Clamp load presses the embossed ribs against the mating surface. The ribs deform or seat according to the material hardness, surface condition and applied load.

  • After tightening

The repeated rib contacts increase resistance to sliding and rotational movement. Under vibration or cyclic loading, this additional interface resistance helps reduce relative movement between the washer and the mating component.

This mechanism is different from a serrated washer, where concentrated tooth tips penetrate the mating surfaces. It is also different from a conical spring washer, which relies on elastic deflection to maintain preload.

Z Ribbon vs. Other Washer Profiles

Washer type
Z Ribbon Washer
Serrated Lock Washer
Raised-Point Washer
Plain Washer
Conical Spring Washer
Contact mechanism Surface interaction Main purpose When to consider
Continuous embossed Z ribs Distributed raised contact lines Anti-slip and anti-rotation When surface marking needs to be controlled
Sharp radial teeth Tooth penetration Mechanical locking When strong tooth engagement is acceptable
Separate embossment points Localized point contact Anti-slip / anti-rotation When discrete contact points are preferred
Flat surface Broad smooth contact Load distribution When no dedicated locking action is required
Elastic disc deformation Spring-loaded contact Preload compensation When joint relaxation or thermal movement is a concern

The Z Ribbon design therefore occupies a different position from a conventional lock washer: its value is the combination of embossed friction and controlled surface interaction, not tooth penetration or spring preload.

Design Parameters We Control

For custom Z Ribbon Washers, the rib pattern can be engineered around the joint rather than simply copied from a standard flat washer.

Key parameters include

  • Washer OD and ID — matched to the bolt, nut or mounting boss.
  • Material thickness — selected according to required stiffness, forming depth and load conditions.
  • Z-rib height — influences contact pressure and the degree of surface engagement.
  • Rib width and pitch — affect the number and distribution of contact lines.
  • Rib orientation — can be adapted to the intended anti-rotation direction or assembly requirement.
  • Embossment location — controls where the locking interface acts.
  • Flat peripheral area — useful where controlled seating around the embossed region is required.

For production parts, these dimensions should be verified against the customer's drawing and the actual mating materials. A rib profile that performs well against steel may behave differently against aluminum, coated sheet or engineering plastics.

Material Options

  • AISI 304 (A2): general-purpose stainless steel with balanced corrosion resistance for industrial equipment, outdoor structures and conventional machinery.
  • AISI 316 (A4): molybdenum-bearing stainless steel with improved resistance to chlorides and acids for marine, chemical and frequent-washdown environments.
  • 65Mn: spring-steel grade with good elasticity and fatigue resistance for joints under higher loads and repeated vibration.

Surface Treatments

  • Plain: retains the natural silver stainless steel surface and metallic appearance.
  • Polished: a higher surface finish for appearance-sensitive applications.
  • Passivated: removes surface free iron and reinforces the passive film for improved corrosion resistance.
  • Trivalent blue-white zinc: eco-friendly zinc plating with a bright blue-white appearance for general corrosion protection.
  • Black oxide / phosphating: matte dark surface commonly used inside machinery or where a non-reflective appearance is required.
  • Eco Dacromet: chromium-free zinc-aluminium coating with good corrosion resistance for outdoor or demanding environments.
  • Special surface treatments: custom finishes can be realized on request; process and lead time are confirmed at inquiry.

Manufacturing & Customization

Ningbo Yinzhou Zhenhua produces Z Ribbon Washers through stamping and forming processes, with tooling developed around the required washer profile.

For drawing-based projects, we can work with:

Customer drawing → tooling review → sample stamping → dimensional inspection → sample approval → batch production

Custom parameters may include washer diameter, thickness, hole geometry, Z-rib arrangement, rib height, material and surface treatment.

Progressive stamping is suitable for repeated production because the forming operation can be controlled consistently across batches. Tool condition is particularly important for embossed products: excessive wear can gradually change rib height, edge definition or overall flatness.

Why Choose Ningbo Yinzhou Zhenhua

For this type of stamped washer, manufacturing capability matters because the anti-slip function depends on formed geometry, not simply the material grade.

Ningbo Yinzhou Zhenhua has specialized in stamping parts and anti-loosening fastener components since 1993, giving the company more than 30 years of experience in progressive stamping and formed metal components.

The production process covers tooling, stamping and dimensional control, allowing the rib profile to be developed and adjusted within the manufacturing process rather than outsourced between unrelated suppliers.

For OEM projects, this matters when the customer needs a washer that must match a specific mating surface, rib height or installation space. Instead of treating the Z Ribbon Washer as a generic commodity part, the engineering team can review the drawing, material, embossment geometry and production requirements as one system.

FAQ (Engineering & Procurement)

Is a Z Ribbon Washer suitable for aluminum or coated sheet?

It can be, but the actual result depends on the material hardness, coating thickness, clamp load and rib geometry. Its advantage is that the continuous embossed profile can provide anti-slip contact without the concentrated cutting action of sharp serrated teeth.

Does the Z pattern replace a serrated lock washer?

Not automatically. A Z-rib washer relies primarily on friction and embossed contact, while a serrated washer relies on tooth penetration. If the application requires aggressive mechanical bite, a serrated design may be more appropriate.

Does rib height affect locking performance?

Yes. Rib height changes how the embossed profile seats and deforms under clamp load. Excessively low ribs may provide insufficient engagement, while an overly aggressive profile can create unnecessary surface deformation.

Can the washer be used on painted surfaces?

It depends on the coating and the required joint performance. If electrical grounding is required, this product should not be assumed to provide a reliable conductive path simply because the ribs increase mechanical contact.

Can the Z pattern be customized?

Yes. Rib height, width, pitch, orientation and distribution can be developed according to a drawing or sample, subject to stamping feasibility and material thickness.

Is 65Mn always better than stainless steel?

No. 65Mn offers different mechanical characteristics, but stainless grades provide better inherent corrosion resistance. The correct choice depends on load, forming requirements, environment and expected service life.
