DIN 6798J Internal Serrated Lock Washers

AISI 304 (A2) AISI 316 (A4) 65Mn

Internal-tooth bite + axial spring force | Compact OD, no extra outer clearance | OEM/ODM

DIN 6798J Internal Serrated Lock Washers are designed for joints where the available space around the fastener head is limited. Their serrations are formed along the inner circumference rather than the outer edge, allowing the washers to remain relatively compact around the screw head.

Product Overview

When the screw or bolt is tightened, the inner teeth press against the underside of the fastener head and the mating surface. At the same time, the washer body is compressed and provides spring action within the joint. The locking effect therefore comes from the interaction between the tooth engagement and the washer's elastic deformation.

This configuration is particularly useful when an external-tooth washer would extend too far beyond the fastener head or interfere with nearby components. Ningbo Yinzhou Zhenhua manufactures DIN 6798J Internal Serrated Lock Washers in AISI 304 (A2), AISI 316 (A4) and 65Mn, with standard and drawing-based production available for industrial and OEM applications.

  • Type: DIN 6798J internal serrated lock washer
  • Materials: AISI 304 (A2), AISI 316 (A4), 65Mn
  • Tooth position: Internal circumference
  • Main advantage: Compact outside diameter around the fastener head
  • Typical use: Electrical equipment, sheet-metal assemblies, appliances, compact machinery and automotive components
  • Customization: Size, material, tooth geometry, finish and packaging

Where the DIN 6798J Works Best

  • The main reason to choose DIN 6798J is not simply that it has internal teeth. It is the space saved around the outside of the fastener.
  • An external-tooth washer uses the area outside the screw head, which can become a problem when the fastener is installed close to another component, inside a narrow housing or on a compact stamped-metal assembly. The DIN 6798J keeps its locking teeth inside the washer perimeter, so the surrounding clearance can remain relatively small.
  • The internal teeth also work well beneath screw heads that provide sufficient bearing area for the washer. For compact electrical assemblies, appliance panels, automotive components and light machinery, this can make the J type easier to integrate than an external-tooth design.
  • One important point is that the washer should be selected according to the actual fastener head and joint surface. A compact outside diameter does not automatically mean that every screw head is suitable. The washer must have adequate contact with the underside of the head, and the tooth geometry must be appropriate for the application.

DIN 6798J vs. Other Serrated Washer Designs

Type
DIN 6798J
DIN 6798A
DIN 6797J
DIN 6797A
Tooth location What determines the choice? Typical reason for selection
Inner circumference Fastener head and surrounding clearance Compact assemblies where external teeth would interfere
Outer circumference Available area around the fastener Larger bearing footprint and open mounting areas
Inner circumference Screw head and joint geometry Compact internal-tooth locking arrangement
Outer circumference Surface area and surrounding clearance External-tooth locking on relatively open surfaces

The most useful distinction when selecting between DIN 6798J and DIN 6797J is the washer geometry and the applicable standard, rather than simply the words “internal tooth.” When replacing one with the other, check the actual dimensional requirements, fastener head diameter and washer profile instead of assuming that the two parts are interchangeable.

Likewise, DIN 6798J should not be selected solely because the assembly is small. If there is enough surrounding space and a larger contact area is preferred, an external-tooth design may be more appropriate.

Material Options

  • AISI 304 (A2) is the general-purpose option for machinery, electrical equipment, appliances and outdoor applications where moderate corrosion resistance is sufficient.
  • AISI 316 (A4) is better suited to chloride exposure, marine environments, chemical equipment and frequent washdown. Its molybdenum content provides better resistance to localized corrosion than 304 stainless steel.
  • 65Mn is a spring-steel option for applications where elasticity and mechanical strength are more important than stainless-steel corrosion resistance. It is commonly considered for mechanically loaded joints subject to repeated vibration.

Material selection should take into account both the washer and the mating fastener. For stainless-steel assemblies exposed to moisture or corrosive media, the complete joint material combination should be considered rather than selecting the washer independently..

Surface Treatments

  • Plain: retains the natural silver stainless steel surface and metallic appearance.
  • Polished: a higher surface finish for appearance-sensitive applications.
  • Passivated: removes surface free iron and reinforces the passive film for improved corrosion resistance.
  • Trivalent blue-white zinc: eco-friendly zinc plating with a bright blue-white appearance for general corrosion protection.
  • Black oxide / phosphating: matte dark surface commonly used inside machinery or where a non-reflective appearance is required.
  • Eco Dacromet: chromium-free zinc-aluminium coating with good corrosion resistance for outdoor or demanding environments.
  • Special surface treatments: custom finishes can be realized on request; process and lead time are confirmed at inquiry.

Customization and Quality Control

  • DIN 6798J washers are produced by stamping processes, with tooling and process parameters controlled according to the required washer dimensions and tooth geometry. For larger or recurring orders, progressive tooling can be used to maintain consistent forming and improve production efficiency.
  • Ningbo Yinzhou Zhenhua handles tooling design and maintenance, stamping, progressive die production and machining within the same manufacturing operation. This allows dimensional or tooth-profile requirements from customer drawings to be followed through sampling and series production without changing production suppliers.
  • For OEM projects, customers can specify inside diameter, outside diameter, thickness, tooth configuration, material, surface treatment and packaging according to their assembly requirements. Samples can also be evaluated before mass production.
  • An IATF 16949 quality management system is applied to production and process control, with attention to dimensional consistency and batch traceability.

FAQ

Q1. When should I choose DIN 6798J Internal Serrated Lock Washers instead of an external-tooth washer?

Choose DIN 6798J when the area around the screw head is restricted and an external serration would extend into adjacent components or mounting features. The internal-tooth arrangement keeps the locking teeth within the washer perimeter.
If there is sufficient surrounding space and a larger outer contact area is more important, an external-tooth design such as DIN 6798A may be worth considering.

Q2. Does the DIN 6798J fit every type of screw head?

Not necessarily. The screw head must provide suitable bearing contact with the washer, and the washer dimensions must match the fastener. For small screws, countersunk heads or specially shaped fasteners, the actual head diameter and underside geometry should be checked before ordering.
For OEM production, providing the screw drawing or sample is the safest way to confirm the washer selection.

Q3. What happens if the screw is over-tightened?

Excessive torque can flatten or deform the serrations and permanently compress the washer. Once the tooth profile or spring characteristics have been significantly altered, the original locking performance may not be maintained.
The tightening torque should therefore be determined from the complete joint design, including the screw grade, mating material and required clamp load.

Q4. Can DIN 6798J be used on painted or coated surfaces?

It depends on the coating and the required locking performance. The internal teeth need to establish sufficient mechanical engagement with the mating surfaces. A thick, soft or easily damaged coating can change the way the teeth engage and may affect preload or surface protection.
For coated assemblies, it is better to evaluate the washer, coating thickness and tightening condition together rather than selecting the washer independently.

Q5. Can DIN 6798J be reused?

For production maintenance and vibration-sensitive joints, replacement is recommended after disassembly. The teeth may have been embedded into the mating surfaces during the first tightening, and the tooth profile can change during removal.
For critical assemblies, using a new washer provides a more predictable locking condition.

Q6. Can you manufacture DIN 6798J according to a drawing?

Yes. Non-standard dimensions and production requirements can be reviewed from customer drawings or samples. The inquiry can include washer dimensions, material, tooth geometry, surface treatment, quantity and packaging requirements.
For a new application, providing the screw specification and mating material together with the washer drawing makes engineering review more accurate.
