DIN 6798V Conical External Serrated Lock Washers

AISI 304 (A2) AISI 316 (A4) 65Mn

Conical spring force + external-tooth bite | High elastic compensation | OEM/ODM

DIN 6798V conical external serrated lock washers combine an external-tooth locking edge with a conical spring section. The teeth provide mechanical engagement with the fastening surfaces, while the conical body allows elastic movement to accommodate changes in the joint. Available in AISI 304, AISI 316 and 65Mn, the washers can be supplied in standard sizes or manufactured to customer drawings and samples.

Product Overview

  • The main difference between DIN 6798V and a conventional external serrated washer is the shape of the washer body.
  • DIN 6798V Conical External Serrated Lock Washers is not flat. Its conical section is compressed when the joint is tightened, giving the washer a degree of elastic movement in addition to the locking effect provided by the external teeth.
  • This matters when the clamped parts are not completely static during service. Thermal expansion, vibration, minor settling or changes in the joint can alter the original clamping condition. A conical washer can respond to these small changes within its working range instead of behaving like a completely flat stamped washer.
  • The external teeth serve a different purpose. They engage with the fastener and mating surface and resist relative rotation.

DIN 6798V in the Joint

After installation, the washer sits between the fastener and the mating component.

As the screw or nut is tightened, the conical washer is flattened toward the joint. The deformation stores elastic energy, while the serrated outer edge engages the contact surfaces.

If the joint experiences a small change in its clamping condition, the washer can recover part of its deformation. This makes the V type particularly relevant where maintaining the fastening condition over time is more important than simply adding a serrated washer.

The actual amount of spring movement and permissible deformation depends on the washer dimensions and material. It should therefore be evaluated against the manufacturer's size chart rather than assumed from the DIN designation alone.

When Should You Choose DIN 6798V Conical External Serrated Lock Washers?

A flat external-tooth washer may already be sufficient for a conventional fastening point. The V type becomes more interesting when the joint has some degree of movement or when elastic compensation is part of the fastening requirement.

Typical considerations include

  • continuous mechanical vibration
  • temperature changes during operation
  • minor settling of the joint components
  • applications where maintaining clamping force is important
  • fastening points where an external serrated configuration is acceptable

It is used across automotive components, machinery, electrical equipment, power-generation equipment, rail-related applications and other industrial assemblies.

The application itself does not determine the washer size. Screw diameter, washer dimensions, substrate, tightening torque and available installation space still need to be checked.

Required Required

If the application only requires an external serrated washer, DIN 6798A may be sufficient.

If the joint is expected to experience changes that make elastic compensation useful, DIN 6798V is the configuration worth evaluating.

This is also why DIN 6798V should not simply be described as a “stronger DIN 6798A”. The two designs solve slightly different joint requirements.

Material and Finish

Zhenhua produces DIN 6798V in AISI 304 (A2), AISI 316 (A4) and 65Mn.

For general stainless-steel applications, AISI 304 provides a practical balance between corrosion resistance and cost. AISI 316 is more appropriate where chloride exposure, marine conditions or frequent washdown are involved.

65Mn is used when the mechanical characteristics of spring steel are required. Its suitability also depends on the surface treatment and operating environment.

Available finishes include plain stainless steel, polished and passivated surfaces, as well as trivalent blue-white zinc, black oxide/phosphating and Eco Dacromet for applicable materials.

For corrosive applications, the coating should be selected together with the base material rather than treated as an isolated specification.

Production from Tooling to Finished Washer

DIN 6798V requires more than simply punching a toothed ring from sheet material. The tooth profile and conical shape have to remain consistent after forming, particularly when the washers are produced in large batches.

Ningbo Yinzhou Zhenhua handles stamping, progressive die production, tooling development and machining within its manufacturing operation. In-house tooling capability allows the production team to work from customer drawings or samples when standard dimensions do not meet the application.

For OEM production, requirements can include washer dimensions, conical height, tooth geometry, material, surface treatment and packaging.

Samples can be supplied before mass production when the customer needs to check the washer against the screw and mating component.

Production is controlled under the company's IATF 16949 quality management system, with inspection carried out during the manufacturing process and before shipment.

A Few Points to Check Before Ordering

For a standard DIN 6798V order, the nominal screw size is normally the starting point. For a new or non-standard application, however, more information is useful.

Please confirm

  • Screw size and head type — determines the available contact area.
  • Washer dimensions — inside diameter, outside diameter and thickness.
  • Material — AISI 304, AISI 316 or 65Mn.
  • Surface treatment — particularly important for carbon-steel washers used outdoors.
  • Operating conditions — vibration, temperature variation, moisture and corrosion exposure.
  • Quantity and packaging — required for production and quotation planning.

A drawing or sample of the existing fastening arrangement is preferable for customized projects.

FAQ

Is DIN 6798V Conical External Serrated Lock Washers mainly a locking washer or a spring washer?

It combines both functions. The external serrations provide mechanical engagement, while the conical body provides elastic deformation. Neither feature should be considered separately when selecting the washer.

Why would I use DIN 6798V instead of DIN 6798A?

The V type is worth considering when the joint can benefit from the elastic action of a conical washer. DIN 6798A is a flat external serrated design and is more straightforward for conventional applications where additional spring movement is not required.

Does the V shape increase the available spring travel?

The conical geometry provides elastic deformation, but the actual working range depends on the specific washer dimensions, material and installation condition. The correct value should come from the applicable size and technical data rather than a general assumption.

Can DIN 6798V be used with stainless-steel screws?

Yes, stainless-steel versions are available in AISI 304 and AISI 316. Material compatibility should still be checked for the complete joint, particularly in humid, marine or chemically aggressive environments.

Is DIN 6798V reusable?

For critical joints, replacement after disassembly is recommended. The serrations and conical section may change during installation and removal, so using a new washer gives a more predictable fastening condition.

Can you make DIN 6798V from a customer drawing?

Yes. Zhenhua can review drawings or samples for non-standard dimensions, materials, tooth geometry, conical dimensions and surface treatments before production.
